The River Thames

JGF Passenger Boats operates from Walton on Thames on the River Thames so we had better tell you a bit about it;

The River Thames is officially the longest River in England starting at its source, Thames Head which can be found just off of Tetbury Road near the village of Cirencester in Gloucestershire. The course of the river spans 215 miles of picturesque towns such as Oxford, Goring, Henley on Thames, Marlow, Maidenhead, Windsor & Eton, Staines, Weybridge, Shepperton, Walton on Thames, Lower Sunbury, Thames Ditton, Kingston upon Thames and Teddington. After Teddington you enter the tidal stretch of the Thames which flows through Richmond before passing through the centre of London and out into the North Sea.

The Thames is navigable from the village of Lechlade all the way out to sea, falling some 243 feet from Lechlade to Sea Level the River requires some 45 Locks and even more Weirs to control the flow of water. The Lock's enable river traffic to rise or fall to the next higher or lower section of river (depending on which way you are travelling) and the Weirs manage flow and height of water, both being operated by trained "Lock Keepers" who usually live in a house beside the Lock. London has a very special piece of engineering called the Thames Barrier, the world's second largest mechanical flood barrier which was completed in 1982 taking 8 years to construct. The Barrier protects London from exceptionally high tides and storm surges which are a combination of certain weather conditions and pose a serious threat to the City.

We operate from our base in Walton on Thames and can cruise to anywhere from Staines to Teddington which is non tidal and offers an abundance of breathtaking scenery, Historic Landmarks, Royal Palaces, Wildlife and Homes of the Rich and Famous. The town name" Walton" comes from the Anglo Saxon's meaning "Farm of the Britons" and even before the Saxon's and Roman's.
